- Idea: Create a "Wikidata for literary history" 
 - Information system for literary history
 - LOD-based, with exploratory interface and SPARQL-endpoint
 - Approach of an "atomization" of literary history 
- Compared to Wikidata: 
 - Focused on one domain (French novel 1750-1800)
 - Better coverage and higher density of assertions for this domain

## (2) Federation

•	To actually explore patterns across different knowledge graphs, the concept of federation within the Linked Open Data paradigm is needed
•	Federation or Federated queries is the term used to describe the querying of multiple SPARQL endpoints.
•	The idea is that one's own research data is not a data silo, but is connected to the Giant Global Knowledge Graph.
•	Ideally, one's own data can be supplemented by another Knowledge Graph, or one's own data can usefully supplement other Knowledge Graphs.
•	The W3C defines "Federated Queries" as follows: “SPARQL can be used to express queries across diverse data sources, whether the data is stored natively as RDF or viewed as RDF via middleware.”

•	As you see here, the MiMoTextBase as a wikibase instance is part of the wikibase ecosystem and also part of the Linked Data Web. 
•	Federated queries are necessary to actually link individual knowledge graphs 
•	We see Federation as a crucial step in realizing the full potential of Linked Open Data.

#### Linking both knowledge graphs

•	In order to run Federated Queries, there are some prerequisites: 
•	The entities of our graph were matched with Wikidata entities. We did this for all topics, for all place entities, for literary works and for all person entities.
•	This visualization gives an overview about the types of entities ("classes") which were matched between Wikidata. 
•	The mapping of entities across knowledge bases was realized with the property "exact match" in one direction and the "MiMoText ID" as Wikidata property in the other.

•	An example for the use of ‘federated queries’ is enriching our spatial concepts with geographical data from Wikidata, which is based on the matching of spatial concepts established in our spatial vocabulary. 
•	These matches are part of our Wikibase as a ‘triple pattern’ linking the two Wikibase instances: our domain specific MiMoText graph and the large Wikidata graph. 
•	One of the advantages of this approach is that information does not have to be stored redundantly. Instead, we can use the values of Wikidata property ‘coordinate location’ (P625) for a query on narrative locations of French novels of the second half of the 18th century.
•	Using the map view provided by the Wikidata Query Service for each Wikibase instance, we can get an overview with individual nodes for narrative locations, again interactive, enabling users to click on them and access additional information allowing further exploration

## (5) Self-hosted wikibase instance vs. wikibase.cloud service

#### Self-hosted wikibase instances

- Advantages  
 - Configuration options / extensions
 - More options in the setup of the tool suite, e.g. with OpenRefine (and access to "local" Wikibase)
 - More options / autonomy for federation-related settings
 - Sustainability: can be guaranteed by TCDH
- Disadvantages  
 - Challenges in the setup (e.g. user/rights, installation of various extensions) -> recommendation: Wikibase Suite [Docker]
 - Security issues must be taken into account, especially for collaborative projects (with multiple users)

#### Wikibase.cloud service

- Advantages  
 - Most important functions "out of the box" (in 5 minutes), immediately public (can also be disadvantageous, see below)
 - Ideal for quick piloting, particularly advantageous for collaborative projects
 - Security aspects easier to handle
- Disadvantages  
 - Various important extensions cannot be configured, including: extension for datatype:mediafile (instead of just "Commons mediafile") is missing, so all images must be uploaded to Commons or integrated externally
 - MediaWikiSyntax cannot display iframes (plugin / extension required for this, which cannot be installed)
 - URL cannot be configured (https://example-project.wikibase.cloud)
 - Restrictions in the configuration (e.g. string fields up to a maximum of 2,500 characters, instead of 8. 000)
 - Federation between several wikibase.cloud instances is not yet clearly regulated 
 - Sustainability: cannot yet be guaranteed by wikibase.cloud (longterm use)
 - Data inevitably immediately public (may have problems with copyright issues)

#### Lessons Learned and Future

- We adapted our customized PyWikiBot, but [Quickstatements] would have been sufficient for the most import scenarios.
- Sharing data with Wikidata and federation are key steps towards ensuring sustainability and the project’s relevance in the Linked Open Data (LOD) ecosystem.
- The project [LODinG (Linked Open Data in the Humanities)](https://loding.uni-trier.de) will extend MiMoText methods to other domains from 2024–2028. The LOD paradigm is relevant in further TCDH projects, e.g. the [Princesses' Libraries project](https://tcdh.uni-trier.de/en/projekt/princesses-libraries-and-knowledge-practices-18th-century-germany).

As already mentioned, we have matched not only the spatial concepts but also the author entities with Wikidata items. Via ‘federated queries’ we can retrieve useful information about ‘alias labels’ or multilingual labels and use it further (for example for the controlled vocabulary labels in additional languages). For each Wikidata item, there are alternative labels stored in the infobox under “also known as”. These are formalized in the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) standard and can be queried via the property skos:altLabel (query 175, https://tinyurl.com/22qcoc8m).
